" Wednesday Wind W with rain about 3 PM Mr Cadotts Ind. came here on their way out. they have plenty of furrs. the Captain paid only half price for the Gun he had in Debt from Mr Goodwin because it burst the 2d or third shot fired out of her. gave them a little Tobacco and Brandy for paying their Credits."

Sept. 27 1795
" Sunday Wind NW fine weather Ind. all drunk Capt. Corn came in with Meat and for Debt, towards Evening gave all the Crees Credit for without they got it, they would go to the other houses. It is of little consequence to come with 3 Craft for this place & one half of the Cargoe is flour and Meat which can be done very well without; I must now go and make an outfit for Mr Linklater who wants more Goods of many Articles than is bro't Inland. had we but plenty of Men and Craft we could very easily counteract the views of NW Company but they have such a number of Canoes and Men that they make so many small Posts against us & when it all comes together it amounts to a great deal of furrs they bro't 18 Canoes loaded & 3 large Battaux's."

Oct. 2
" Friday Wind W fine day set of one Battaux for the burnt Carrying place & the? following Men. Mr Linklater, Robt. Gun, John Anderson, Alex Groundwater, Hugh Linklater, Wm. Halcro, Peter Hewstone & Jacob Henderson. I have now rem'g about 20 Hatchets 3 Hatts? hardly a pointed blanket & 7 pieces of Cloth. Men at the house burning Ashes for Soap. sent John Easter & David Brown to hunt & lay wait for Ind. Self took bad with the Gout in my foot."

Oct. 3
" Saturday Wind N sharp weather. Men Gathering some Hops to take down for a sample. they are very numerous here. several Asniboils came in for Tobacco and Brandy and others gone to Mr Augees and Descharleys. they tell me their is a vast numerous band coming in. our Meat is growing very little for Mr Linklater was obliged to throw away vast Quantitys of piece Meat in Summer. it could keep no longer and the Dogs would scarcely eat it. I am sorry now I sent Mr Millar away if the Ind. are so numerous & most of them intend to come here I shall have need of all the Goods."

Oct. 4
" Sunday Wind NW blows fresh fine day. early in the Morning sev'l Asniboils came in haste for Brandy & Tobacco to all the Houses to go and Meet the bands the Canadians are wholly out of Prov. sent Men with them. Self and 3 Men mixing Liquor. at 11 AM the bands began to Appear and kept coming till dark Night about 300 Men Women &c & 4 or 500 Dogs. it took our two Battaux's all Day and part of the Evening before we got it all over. after the Lodges was made I was sent for to 7 Chiefs Tents, they all put in a Present of Meat for Brandy to drink, the Crees ? Interpreter to me when they made their harangue, very few went to the other houses, I wish I had Mr Millar back again as I need all he have and the Coterays that have my Horses I would need send after them if pofsible, bringing such large Quantitys of Provision's hurts us very much. myself lame with the Gout. Perhaps opportunity may fall out for me to send to the Mandalls for Wolves &c. and run the risk of Provisions as these Savages have bro't vast Quantity."

Oct. 5
" Monday Wind Nly fine day. Ind. very drunk. the Women begin to come in to Trade their Meat &c for Ammunition &c. Open'd a roll of new Tobacco found it very mch damaged. I suppose by wett for our boat Coverings was uselefs altho' new for the Water ran thro' them as a Seiwe. I made the Asniboils take it. told them it was only flour sprinkled on it. Sent Robt. Eunson & David Brown to fetch the Battaux back."

Oct. 6
" Tuesday Wind Wly fine weather. dispatched the whole Bands of Asniboils. at noon I engaged an Indian to hunt for me. he used to hunt for Mr Augee last Year. gave him some Liquor to carry to his Tent away with him. in the Afternoon Assick & part of the black Mans band of Crees came here with Provisions and for debt. Ind. got drunk the Bands that went away bro't 1350 lb dry piece Meat 400 lb half dry 500 lb Green 400 lb fatt 30 Tongues and 168 lb pounded Meat. I only got 15 Skins in furrs from the whole of them."

Oct. 7
" Wednesday Wind NW fine day the Ind. of last night went away. the black Man came from Mr Augees and wanted me to let him have Guns in Debt, I hesitated at first for fear they should cheat me, he made such great Promises of Payment that I at last complied. paid for 250 lb Piece Meat 46 lb fatt. David Brown & R. Eunson came home from fetching the Battaux back."

" Sunday Wind NW fine warm day at 9 AM two Asniboils came in for Brandy and Tobacco the Band being nigh hand sent James Brown with them, about 3 hours after they arrived, Mr Augee hoisted his flagg, but they all came here. Self bad with Gout hardly able to walk. Mr Millar attending Indians."

" Monday Wind Wly fine day all hands still building the House &c. at noon the Ind. went away paid 240 lb pounded meat, 176 lb pieces Meat 72 lb fatt & 18 Tongues."

" Tuesday Wind and Weather as before. In the Afternoon an Asniboin Chief came in for Debt, brot 60 lb piece Meat 35 lb fatt and 9 lb beat Meat."

Robinson, they have been very Unfortunate this Journey indeed. they lost my 3 Horses and Mr Jefsommes that now must be paid for, and had they another day or two to go they all must have shared the same fate they was obliged to leave some Goods and Mr Millar lost all his own things and was obliged to pay one of the Canad. for taking part of the Goods on their Dogs sleds the Canad. lost two horses and all of them was froze very much. James Slatter froze his hands so much that the others in Company was necefsitated to button his Cloaths round him. Mr Millar bro't 120 MB and two excellent horses he bought altho very dear, and he made an Agreement with Jefsomme for another Horse, as I have not the Articles he wants for it, the Payment will be refered 'till the fall. he would not sell this horse unlefs he got the Watch also that Mr Millar had, which he was obliged to comply with altho' the Watch belonged to myself that I lent him for the Journey, had not these unforseen accidents happened they would have bro't home 3 or 400 MB at least. the Canadians that went with Mr Millar he beleives most of them are going to the Illinois."

" Friday Wind S calm day went to the long launching and carrying place, saw Captains Metweash Shequenaete and Gang 18Canoes all of them followed me to the carrying place having heard us fire in the Morning at Ducks, as we was unloading our Cargoe Metweash made a speech for a drink of Brandy said they had traded all with Mag. Birsay at Red Lake and Sheqonaete? had a Letter and a bundle for Mr Best & was to get Brandy from him, however I would not give them any, at last they agreed if I would give them a dram and a bottle each person they would launch the three Craft and carry part of our Cargoe over, about 2 hours after 4 Canoes of Indians came to me with a good Deal of Moose flesh and some shoe Leather which is very serviceable for the Men are bare footed. obliged to pay part Brandy, the rest Ammunition. late at night got every thing over. paid all the Ind. for Afsisting us a large Keg of Liquor & some Tobacco. I must have given them some if they had not helped us, or else they might have fired on us as their is always some bad as well as good Natives. the Indians never came nigh us in the night time nor troubled any of my Men."

" Saturday Wind S calm day. at 5 AM loaded the Craft and found one of the Craft leaky went about 1 1/2 Mile to the next carrying place & repaired her. Capt. Metweash came over the carrying place just as we was setting off. he begged me to give him two Bottles which I did to get free of them. he says they are to wait for Mr Best as they have Brandy to get from him. after we put up at night, Tickematchewan came to us with a few furrs and some Moose flesh. he slept in my Tent all night."

In the Afternoon Mr Mandall Cameron 4 Cans. overtook us at the last carrying place; he is going to l'hiver le Bish (or Elk River) we put up altogether about 4 Miles in the Lake de Bonno."

Aug. 26
" Wednesday Wind and Weather as yesterday. sett of by day light. at the foot of the Lake we saw two or 3 Tents of Indians who was already drunk from Liquor they got from Mr Bello. they acquainted us that one of the? Chiefs was shot by a Canadian, they wanted to rob the Traders, they cut their Marquee all to pieces & fired thro' it shot a Canad. thro' the Arm, thigh and very near the Breast. as soon as the Indian fell they all ran away & the Canadians made a Barricade of their Bales &c and waited with Anxiety for day light. this was a pitched Battle at the Carrying place, the Indians was crying & had defaced themselves very much by cutting their flesh in sundry places the Canad. Trader Gave them 3 G of Rum & sett of as he knew it was Mr Cardans Canoes a head of them. I waited and got a few furrs and some Meat from them then set of and they never troubled us for any thing except what I gave them.
Slept at the fall below the Cat Carrying place."

" Friday Wind Sly cloudy weather. started by day and went to Point Fotar. the Wind being too much could not engage the Lake, several Canadians was here 14 Canoes all belonging to Mr Peter Grants little Company. the Gentlemen begged of me, when I put ashore to go and look at the Wounded Man that was shot thro'. put up for the Night."

Catchetwa & sev'l Ind. was plauging me for some Liquor ? they had nothing to give for it. we turned up our Craft and pitched them over ready for entering the Lake being now over all the launching places the Canadians stopped here also, the Ind. came down, they got 2 Gns. of Liquor from the other Traders, so I was necefsitated to give him the Same as he always traded with us."

" Monday Wind Nly left the Portage and took Mr John Linklater, Robt. Twatt, Robt. Eunson, Magnus Groundwater, John Scarth, John Anderson, Peter Hewstone and Hugh Linklater.
The whole Trade together amounts to 4100 odd god send it was as much more should I return again. I think I could procure 5 or 6000 MB. I have exerted myself to the utmost of my poor Abilities as your Honor's will see the Trade is nearly double of last Years, the Expences moderate in Presents, the number of Men and the vast Quantity of Prov. traded make the Expences run heavy and also the Journey Brandy allowed to the Men out of the Consignment the Journey being long runs away with a good deal of Liquor. I have had Mr Millar also at the Mandalls Exploring &c as pr Journal all added together makes a good many Beaver."

" Friday Wind SW calm warm day sett of by break of day to crofs the Grand Traverse which we did by breakfast time, carry'd the Cargoe & launched the Craft over the Sand, a fresh breeze sprung up and we sailed to the Mouth of the River that goes to the falls. found Mr Ed. Clouston and all well at Point au Fotar."

" Monday Wind Nly fine day sent 4 Battauxs a head. myself waiting for Mr Clouston who is not ready yet & he has only one Battaux."

" Tuesday Wind and Weather as before. Men getting ready to start. I have given Mr Clouston two Bags of Pimeticon to afsist the Men out, left one Bag for the Men at the house. paid the NW Companys Clerk a bag of Meat for one used by John Linklater at the Portage, left 2 Bags for Mr Best & his Men in case they are in want; and 8 more Bags I have laid by here to carry Men back to Brandon House, that there may be lefs expenditure of European Meat."

May 25
" Wednesday Wind Wly fine weather. sett of in Company with Mr Clouston for Osnaburgh House. saw on the 27th Wesucau & Gang Traded a little Venison and several Sturgeon. nothing occurred untill the 31st when we met Wap,pa,skin,ing traded a whole Moose and some Sturgeon for Brandy and Ammunition hav'g left a 3 Gn. Keg of Spirits divided a Keg of flour amongst the Men. June the 2d saw Ketch & his brother got some Venison and Sturgeon. found a letter left by Mr John McKay informing me of the murder of an Indian at Wabanaben House. 8th saw John Wright and traded some bears flesh from him found at Lake Sal falls another Letter from Mr McKay. 12th saw Lieut. Afsimip several Canoes traded some Venison and arrived at Osnaburgh House the 17th Inst. found Mr James Sutherland and all well divided 2 Bags of Meat amongst the 7 Battaux Crews as no Provisions being at Osnaburgh.
