In the afternoon one of my men Thomas Johnston was bathing himself in the River had the mifsfortune to be Drowned. He went out unbeknown to any body, or else undoubtedly he would have been saved. The Canadians that was building here. They dreged for him above Two hours, but they had not the Luck to Catch him. I gave them a little to Drink for their trouble. I was weak enough maned before, but now I am so weak that undoubtedly I must put up with many insults by the natives that I would not have done. I informed the Indians When I was to stay in the Spring that I would trade Liquor for Provisions as long has my liquor lasted and now I cannot denigh as long as I have any if we was ever so few If I was I should afront every Native that would come to Us. I hope the almighty God will keep Us from all dangers and guide me in your Honor's affairs. I know my patience will be very well tried this Summer. I think myself very unluckey for the little time my Superiors as appointed me master at Hudson's House Which I never have enjoyed much happinefs since here I have been yet. What natives is now over the small pox they are very hard to deal with much more so than they was before."

They wanted to trade part of their Furrs with me which the dam'd Villian's kept watch over the Tent and took every Furr in their own Care. I think it is very hard the natives should be so used, and that they Cannot have the freedom to go where they please, and not to be meddled with on either side. Honble Sirs I cannot help thinking but what some of these Cases might be put a stop to If the Canadian Traders Servants was to be stoped having any Connections with the natives till such time as they should arrive at Settlement or Settlements. I am Certain it would be greatly to your Honour's intrust for now the Indians are so decreased That the Frenchmen Just do what they please with them.
