" Monday Wind Northly raw cold rainy weather two Men grinding Hatchets. Carpenters helving Do. Bricklayer and one Man repairing the Fireplaces. Armourer repairing hunting Guns. Taylors making Trading Coats. Cook as Usual. the others grinding Oatmeal. - In the afternoon Mr Falconer with the Factory and Sloops Men attempted to get the old Sloop off without effect - in the evening gave the Beaver Sloop her dispatches and Mr Atkinson went on board. spared Our Taylor to Eastm'n to make their Trading Coats; received 60 Geese."

Carpenter and two Men railing in the Westw'd Haystack. Armourer repairing hunting Guns. two Men brewing. Cook as usual. Taylor making Trading Coats. received Geese from Indians."

" Wednesday Wind Variable raw cold rainy Weather the Ground covered with Snow this morning; Bricklayer, Shipwright, Armourer, Tailor and Cook as Yesterday. Carpenter & one Man grinding and helving Hatchets. the rest salting Geese salted 2 Hhds - Received 270 Geese from Indians & 74 lb Fish from the old Women. - 5 Canoes of Eastw'd & Abbitibby Indians came in brought a few Summer Furrs."
Sept. 26
" Thursday Wind ENE fine warm sun. The Bricklayer repairing the Fireplace in the Chiefs room; the rest getting the two rafts of firewood up the Bank which we got home during Shiptime. PM the Shallop came up to the Factory having taken all the Buoys up except some particular ones which the Master of the Beaver Sloop desired to be left for his going out by. Since Tuesday last the Weather has been so continually thick that they did not see the Ship set sail - The Albany Sloop sailed from Ship hole last night. The Beaver Sloop's in the offing yet Wind bound. Received 42 Geese from Indians."

" Friday Wind Variable cold raw weather with middling rain. the Beaver Sloop out of sight. Bricklayer and one Man repairing the Plaistering on the Chiefs Flanker. Shipwright and one Man repairing the old Sloops Boat. Armourer repairing Indians Guns. Taylor (who acts also as Steward) making Trading Coats. Carpenter & one Man railing in the Eastw'd Haystack, the rest variously employed, as drawing off Brandy, getting the remains of the Poplar up the bank, salting Geese &c. - Cooshish, an Abbitibby Indian and Family came in brought a few Furrs."

" Saturday Wind SW fine pleasant Weather. Bricklayer, Armourer & Taylor as before. House Carpenter with the rest repairing the Leads on the Sheds and Houses - received 90 Geese from Indians. The Abbitibby Indian and Family went away."
Sept. 29
" Sunday Wind WSW fine Weather four Canoes of Uplanders came in Viz. Capt. Chechamoch? and 2 Sons, Wapomeg & two of Capt. Cowestoggana's Sons - no divine Service on Act. of these Indians coming in. PM the Man whom was at Hannah Bay serving Powder and Shot returned having been relieved by Mr Geo. Donald on Thursday last received a Letter informing me they had already salted 12 Hhds and that they shou'd soon be in want of more Powder and Shott."

" Monday Wind WSW a fresh breeze fine Weather fore part latter part northerly with rain. about 10 OClock AM Mr P Turnor, Sam'l Sibley, Tho Knarston, John Laughton, Wm Wafs? and two Indians set off in the Battaux with supplys for Brunswick House. the three former are to stay there in lieu of Will Bolland and Henry Burney, who are to come down by the return of the Battaux. - Sent seven Men to the Woods to fell, crofscut & gather Firewood. Bricklayer repairing the plaistering of the Chiefs House. Armourer repairing Indians Guns. Shipwright and one Man repairing the old Sloops Boat. Steward & Cooper salting Geese. Traded the Indians of Yesterday who went away in the evening. - Received 260 Geese from Indians whom I served Powder & Shot and sent to the Marsh again. - Received a New 3 foot Gun makers name Wilson 1778 from one of the Uplanders which he said burst the 1st time of firing and gave him a new one in lieu."

" Thursday Wind WNW blow'd hard all day frost in the Shade. all hands picking Oakum for Caulking the old Sloops boat which the Shipwright has near finished repairing."

Shipwright & one Man repairing the old Sloops Boat. Tho Halcro Glazing Windows. received 140 lb Fish from Indians and 45 Geese. PM the Men returned from the Woods having collected as much as will be three rafts of Firewood. Mr Cloney indisposed."

" Sunday Wind NW cloudy cool weather all Hands employed salting Geese which hindered divine service. In the evening dispatched Anth'y King and three Men in the long boat for Hannah Bay with a further supply of Powder Shot &c and sent the Shipwright and six Men to the Woods to fell Xcut and gather firewood and at the same time to seek for Crooks and Timbers for a new flat bottom'd Boat. - Receiv'd 400 Geese from Indians salted a puncheon cont'g 247. Mr Cloney very ill."

" Monday Wind WNW cloudy cool weather 7 Men gone to the woods. 4 gone to Brunswick with the Battaux. 4 gone to Hannah Bay with the long boat which sailed from Middlebrough early this morning 2 staying at hannah Bay to serve the Hunters Powder and Shot. Armourer repairing hunting Guns. Steward making Cloaths for Mr Cloney. Chiefs servant & Cook as Usual. received 225 Geese from Indians. Mr Cloney very ill."

" Thursday Wind Southly rain latter part the Men employed as before. receiv'd 140 lb Fish & 122 Geese from Indians. Mr Cloney pretty well recover'd from his late illnefs."

" Friday light airs variable mizling rain in the evening the Men employed as before. an Abbitibby Indian took Debt and went away for his Winter Quarters. Mr Cloney burst a new 4 foot Gun Sandwell 1778 the first time he fired it which he took up out of the Warehouse."

" Saturday Wind WSW raw cold Weather with snow and Sleet. the Men employed as before. PM the 7 Men returned from the Woods having gathered all the wood that was handy to be got at."

" Sunday Wind and weather as Yesterday all hands employed salting Geese in the Forenoon, in the afternoon sent 7 Men to the Woods to Raft the Firewood they have gathered. late in the evening the Long Boat arrived from Hannah Bay with 16 Hhds and a pipe of Geese."

" Monday Wind SW raw cold weather with snow at times. 4 gone to Brunswick with the Battaux. 7 gone to woods. 2 serving Powder & Shott at Hannah Bay. Taylor at work for the Chief Armourer repairing Indians Guns Chiefs servant Cooking tending the Hogs &c. - went down to the Hay Creek with 4 Men in the jolly Boat & returned in the evening with 223 Geese. received 109 by two Indians from the East marsh."

" Tuesday Wind & Weather much the same as Yesterday. the Men employed as before except the Armourer and one to afsist him who was stocking an Anchor for rafting the wood home and Steward with other three? Men Salting Geese & Stowing away the Provisions in the Celler. in the Afternoon went to the Men at the Woods & left Anth'y King and two Men and brought home the Shipwright to finish the Old Boats repairs which will be wanted for getting the Wood home."

" Wednesday Wind Northerly very cold with much snow all day. Anth'y King and eight Men at the Woods rafting Firewood. 4 gone with the Battaux to Brunswick. 2 at Hannah Bay serving Powder & Shot to the Hunters and salting Geese. Shipwright and one Man finished the repairs of and began Caulking the old Sloops Boat Armourer repairing Indians Guns. Taylor at work for the Chief. Chiefs Servant cooking tending the Hogs &c. PM Pequatisahaw came in with a few Beaver Skins."

" Thursday Wind NW a light breeze fine weather. the Men employed as before. Pequatisahow went away. - in the evening received a Letter by one of the Englishmen from Hannah Bay informing me they had salted 6 Hhds & a puncheon more Geese and that most of the Indians had left off hunting. - Salted 2 Hhds containing 249 Geese."

" Friday Wind light airs variable fine weather the Men employ'd as before. the Men whom came from Hannah Bay Yesterday cutting Firewood tending the Hogs &c."
Oct. 19
" Saturday Wind Variable warm weather about noon the Battaux returned from Brunswick home they tell me the water was so shoal in going up they were obliged to leave part of their Cargo at Cutapohiggon which they have brought down now by their return. the Shipwright finished the old Boat which I sent with 4 Men to afsist in rafting the Wood home. they all returned in the evening having brought 4 Rafts within 1/2 a Mile of the Factory. received 378 Geese. - several of the Hunters left off hunting."

" Sunday Wind NE a fresh breeze fine mild weather. the Men fetched home the rafts the rest of Our hunters came in having left off hunting. gave them their last treat for hunting. receiv'd 234 Geese & 56 lb Fish."

" Monday Wind NE fine pleasant weather sent eight Men to Middleborough to gather driftwood who returned again in the evening having collected as much as will make one good raft. Anth. King and 3 Men to hannah Bay for Geese. Shipwright Cooper & Nicol Spence to seek for crooks & Timbers for building a large flat bottom'd boat for the purposes of unloading the Sloops & Shallop bringing Our hay home and getting Stones for Ballast for the Ship. Armourer mending Indians Guns Taylor at Work for the Chief. Chiefs servant Cooking tending the Hogs &c. late in the Evening Mr Will Bolland arrived from Brunswick house. the Indians very drunk."

" Tuesday Wind variable mizzling rain. The Men before breakfast getting the wood up the Bank to the pile afterwards variously employed Viz. Shipwright and one Man getting Crooks & Timbers two brewing small beer. Cooper preparing Casks for drawing off Brandy and saltung Geese. Steward and 4 Men salting 4 Hhds Geese conrain'g 500. two Cooking one sharpening the Pitsaws.Armourer mending Indians Guns - Receiv'd 40 Geese - the Indians Drunk."

" Wednesday Wind WNW a fresh Gale cold weather. the Men in the Forenoon carrying the Wood to the Pile. in the afternoon they got the old Sloop afloat but they could not get her home. part of the Indians took debt."

" Thursday Wind SE fine mild Weather. the Men in the Forenoon carrying wood up the Bank to the pile. in the afternoon got home the Old Sloop. the rest of the Indians took debt and they all went away for their Winter Quarters except an old blind woman and another old Woman whom stays to take care of her."

" Friday Wind WNW a fresh breeze mild weather with snow at times. Shipwright Cooper and Nicol Spence getting Crooks and Timbers for the purpose as mentioned before. eight Men at middleborough rafting Drift wood. Taylor (whom acts likewise as Steward) at work for the Chief. Chiefs Servant Cooking tending the Hogs and Cattle &c. Armourer mending Indians Guns."

" Saurday Wind NW fine weather sent the Armourer Shipwright & the rest that was getting Crooks and Timbers to afsist the eight Men whom are rafting drift wood at middleborough. they all returned in the evening with two small rafts. Taylor employed as before and attending on the Chief - Nicol Allen the Chiefs Servant being ill."

" Tuesday Wind NW a heavy Gale with Snow and drift & very sharp Weather. all hands (except the Shipwright who was preparing Timbers & Taylor who was employed as Yesterday) getting the Boats ashore as likewise their Moorings and carrying the Wood up to the Pile."

" Wednesday Wind Northerly very Sharp weather. the river entirely skin'd over with Ice which gave way when the Tide went out and drove the Shallop down as low as the old Factory Barr where she grounded. I have neglected this? long to lay her up in hopes of Anth'y Kings arrival with the long Boat from Hannah Bay. I can't help here remarking how much we are distrefsed for want of two more Sailors and how much the Companys Craft and Stores belonging to them are damaged for want of proper persons to take care of them. as I am obliged to employ Ant'y King and John Laughton ( the only Sailors we have) in navagating the Long Boat to Hannah Bay whom otherwise I should have kept at home to take care of the Vefsels and on the other hand was the Hannah Bay hunt to be neglected I should not be able to support the Settlement already established. much more the intended new one at Abbitibby as we got the major part of our Geese from thence - all hands employed taking up the lanch and endeavouring to get the Shallop back again without effect and at which they were employed 'till midnight."

" Thursday Wind variable freezes very hard all hands employed in getting the Shallop to a proper place to lay her up for the Winter which they with much difficulty very near accomplished having brought her almost a Quarter of a Mile by breaking the Ice all the way before her at which they were employed till 11 OClock at night."
Nov. 1 1782
" Friday Wind Westerly sharp clear weather. AM all hands employed again at the Shallop but the Tide flowed so little that they could not get her nearer in shore. PM carrying firewood up to the pile. about noon the 4 Men (as I suppose) whom went with the Long Boat to Hannah Bay appeared on the opposite side of the River but the Ice is yet two weak for them to come over and too strong for us to afford them any afsistance by a Boat. Receiv'd 2 Rabbits from Our Snares."

" Saturday Wind SE a fresh Gale constant thick snowey Weather and continues freezing pretty sharp. the Men employed getting the Wood up the Bank to the pile. Receiv'd 7 Rabbits."

" Sunday Wind WNW a heavy Gale with Snow and drift & sharp Weather. Perform'd divine Service."
Nov. 4
" Monday Wind WNW fine mild weather a pretty high Tide enabled us to get the Shallop close in shore by breaking the Ice before her at which and mooring or fastening her to the bank the men were employed till noon. - afterwards got the old and new Upland Boats hove upon the Bank.- about 10 OClock in the forenoon the four men from Hannah Bay, whom I saw on the opposite shore on Friday last came in over the Ice they inform me they were obliged by Contrary Winds and bad Weather to lay the long Boat up in a small creek on the 28th Ult. about one Mile on this side Harricanaw or Bread River by a Letter from Mr Geo. Donald I find they have 7 Hhds and a puncheon more Geese salted & 97 Loose. - Mr Donald stayed to take care of the things left as there are several Indians about there, agreeable to Orders given. - two Indian Men came in from Hannah Bay with our 4 Men for a few necefsarys they wanted to take on trust. Receiv'd 5 Rabbits."

" Tuesday Wind SE a fresh breeze mild weather with snow in the forenoon sent three Men & 4 Dogs with sleds to hannah Bay one of the Men to stay there with Mr Donald to take care of the things left there, the other two and the Dogs to return with Geese, Feathers &c. the Casks salted I have directed them to bury & leave there till the Boat returns next Summer as I shall not till then be in want of the Geese and the fetching them home in winter would so much hinder Our getting Timber for Building. - the two Indians returned. - the people in the forenoon getting the Firewood upon the Bank. in the afternoon collecting Brush & Willows and making a Bon fire round which at night with strong Beer and Brandy they made merry on the happy Occasion. - receiv'd 6 Rabbits."

Armourer stocking and repairing hunting Guns. two at the Pit saw. one Cooking for the Men. Taylor at times at work for the Men and acts also as Steward. Chiefs Cook & Chiefs Servant Cowkeeper & two Men killing five Hogs. three Men felling Stockades two at South Bluff hunting two at Hannah Bay taking care of the things left there. David Laughton round the Guns & Traps who unfortunately Shot himself in the hand. Hugh Monroe incapable of Duty from a fall he got down the Cellar last Saturday by which he broke one of his ribs. Henry Burney also incapable of working having fell into a Creek on his Journey to Hannah Bay which has given him a severe pain in his brest and back & Nicol Allen ill with rheumatick pains in his thighs & Knees. receiv'd one red Fox from the Guns not yet in Season."

Whereas misconceptions have arisen concerning the Bounties due to such of the Honorable Company Servants as may be wounded or disabled in fight or to the Widows & Children of those who may be kill'd. These are to inform that the Honble Company did in the Year 1736 send out a printed declaration where in the rewards were mentioned which paper is by Accident mislay'd and in The Posrscript to their General Letter of the Same Date they have the following Paragraph.
P.S. Since writing the above General Letter War having been declared against france as will appear by a printed Copy thereof inclosed in Our Packet we again strictly Order that you keep a good Watch and be always on your Guard to prevent any attempt that may be made to surprise the Factory and if any of Our Servants shall be disabled or kill'd in the defence of Our Factory or Property we will puncrually comply with paying the rewards promised to such as inserted in Out printed declaration likewise inclosed in the Pacquet, which you are to make Publick to all Our Servants at the Factory under Your Command.
And no orders having yet been received by the said Company I do hereby for and in the Name of the said Company as their Chief Factory promise that the said rewards will be punctualy paid as in the said printed declaration is specified.

" Tuesday Wind Variable Southerly fine weather. at 1/2 past 8 AM the Shallop made the signal for seeing one Ship in the offing, upon which I accutred as many men as I had regimentals made for, and gave orders for all hands to be ready on a moments warning, and dispatched two Indians with a letter for Albany (to inform them) which I ordered them to deliver to two other Indians at the North Bluff. at 4 PM the Shallop haul'd down her colours & got underway to come up, which is a signal to us that the proper signal has not been made, and that she's uncertain whether they are friends or enemys, and at about 8 PM the Shallop brought up at the Bottom of the Island & Mr Falconer and the crew came on shore and informed us that when they made they the Signal they saw one three mast Vefsel which appeared to them to be within the usual place where the outer Buoys lay and was standing over to the Southw'd and disappeared in about a 1/4 of an hour from their first seeing them, the tide of ebb being then strong made out, they are all positive to its being a Ship and say they distinctly saw her sails and think they saw her jib haul'd down, & her mizzen topsail aback, and her ensign flying at her mizzen peak. in the evening the two Indians whom I dispatch'd this morning with a letter for Albany returned having delivered it to two other trusty Indians according to the directions I had given. immdeiately dispatch'd those two Indians again to Na,ta,tish,a a point which commands a view of hannah bay, in order to gain intelligence if the Vefsel which had appeared had by mistake or otherwise gone into Hannah Bay - divided ourselves into two watches. & 2 officers with half the men kept watch alternately all night and the other half lay on their arms."

" Wednesday Wind Variable Westerly squally with heavy rain at times at 3/4 past 7 AM the Shallop got underway in order to go out and ascertain the certainty of a ship appearing in the offing, and about 9 she brought up at upper ship hole. at 42 Minutes after 1 PM saw her again underway going out & at 8 minutes after 2 PM She disappeared, and at 55 minutes after 2 PM she came in again but did not make any signal of seeing any thing. about 1/2 past 7 PM the Shallop brought up at the point and at 1/2 past 8 Mr Falconer Anth King with the Shallops crew came on shore, they inform me they went out lower than the lower ship hole, but could not perceive any thing tho' the weather was exceeding clear. all hands alternately 1/2 watching and half on their arms all day."

" Thursday Wind NE a fresh gale fine weather. early this morning the two Indians whom I dispatch'd for Hannah Bay on tuesday evening last return'd without any intelligence of the ship which had appeared in the offing none of the Indians there having seen her nor could they perceive any thing from the top of the pine trees at Natatisha point which leaves us in some doubt of the reality of the appearance of a vefsel, tho' the Shallops crew are still positive to its being a Ship, but I must needs say its something surprizing to me that a Ship should be so close in & never be seen by any of our Indians at the North Bluff. at 1/2 after 11 AM the Shallop got underway for Ship hole in order to lay & look for any Vefsel that may appear - about PM she brought up aback of Pilgims Island - sent down one man with a swivel gun to the bottom of the Island which he is to fire as an alarm to the Factory and retreat home on the appearance of any Boat or Vefsel. one Centinal on the banks edge & another on the House, two repairing the platforms before the gates. Shipwright Steward Cooks and Chiefs Servant as before the rest packing up the Eastmain Stores - dispatched all the Indians to the Marsh. - 20 Min after 2 PM two Indians came running up from the bottom of the Island & informed us that they had heard 5 Great Guns & presently after two others came up from the Whayway Creeks and said they heard 6 Great Guns. I immediately dispatched Mr Faulconer with 4 hands in the Sloops Boat down to the Shallop to enquire if they had not heard or seen any thing in the offing. whom returned in the Evening & acquainted me that nothing had been heard or seen, tho they had been down as low as the Sand head Erecting a Beacon. which makes us much doubt the truth of the Indians intelligence and gives us great reason to believe it's only a false alarm. I have neverthelefs sent a letter by an Indian for Albany which he is not to proceed with unlefs he perceives a strange Vefsel in offing or hears more Guns."

" Thursday Wind NW thick Weather The Indians again came in and informed me they heard 13 Guns. they seem pofsitve to their being great Guns and all agree in the Number. the Indians came from three different parts which gives us great cause to believe that they are not mistaken and gives me uneasinefs in case it should be the Companys Ship as we have only the North Sand head Beacon set and one Buoy laid. I therefore again dispatched Mr Falconer for the Shallop to enquire if they had not yet heard or seen any thing & with a written Order for Anth. King to go out into the roads. Mr Falconer returned about noon & informed me that the Shallop Master & Crew were amaz'd that so many Great Guns should be fired & they not hear them. - The Shallop went out and returned again in the Evening without making any signal (that we could discern) for perceiving any thing out at Sea the Weather at times very thick. All hands cleaning the Yard & Flankers Sheds &c and waiting in anxious expectation of there reports of Guns being fired in the offing. - being further confirmed by the Shallop making a Signal for seeing a Ship in the Offing. - late in the evening received a Letter from Albany by two English Men whom further confirm the reports brought in by the Indians & say they're pofsitive they heard 5 Guns out to Sea off the North Bluff Yesterday about 5 PM."

" Friday Wind Westerly fine weather at day light this morning we discovered a Vefsel in Ship Hole a little to the Southward of the Shallop which presently after we perceived to be a Sloop under way coming up. The Shallop soon after the Sloop pafs'd her got underway and went out. - The Sloop when she got within about 5 Miles of the Fort hoisted a St Georges Ensign which is the Signal for the Ships safe arrival & is now thank God confirmed by the return of Two Men (whom I sent to gain intelligence who and what they were) with the joyful News of the Ship Sea horse Capt. John Richards Commander being safely Anchored in the Roads. The Sloop is the Albany Sloop loaded from the Ship. part of the Men went down with the Beaver Sloop to the Ship the rest with the Boats unloading the Albany Sloop. PM the Captain with Mr Jarvis & Mefs Maugenest & Goodwin came on Shore. the latter three Gentlemen had come from Albany in order to consult with the Council here on the Questions they had before proposed for the Beavers sailing to England and sending a packet overland to new York & from thence to Europe. which thank God the Arrival of the Companys Ship has rendered unnecefsary. two Canoes of Abbitibby Indians brou't a few Furrs. dispatched the two Albany Men with the Servants Letters for Albany."

" Monday Wind Variable Southly cool weather. an extraordinary low Tide immediately succeeding a very high one last night has rendered it impracticable to get Our Shallop afloat at high water. indeed there was very little more water at the Top high water that there frequently is at Low water upon Spring Tides. 12 Men with the Long Boat and large Upland Boat getting Stones for Ships Ballast. the others stowing away the Cargo. - PM received a Letter by George Sutherland and an Indian from Mr Jarvis dated from on Board the Beaver Sloop. which I am concerned to hear was drove ashore in Our East Marsh in the heavy Gale of Wind Yesterday. they request the afsistance of Our Long Boat & Shallop to lighten them but the former is unlucily up the River Stoning & the latter fast aground. dispatched two Men in a Canoe to Order the Long Boat immediately down & endeavoured in the night tide to get the Shallop afloat but in vain. The Long Boat got down to the Factory about Midnight."

The Albany Sloop and Shallop got no further up than middlebrough. The Beaver got off this morning Tide and went down for the Ship to compleat her Cargo for Albany. The Captain came up from the Sloop in the Shallops Boat. The few people at home stowing away the Cargo. Received Flatt Taylor on shore."
