" Sunday - Wind north very cold weather - The Tide flowing pretty high we were enabled to get the other side of the Moose Shallop turned to the Shore to be repaired - About 1/4 past 12 a man was perceived on the Flatts nearly opposite to the Factory calling for somebody to ferry him acrofs. Sent Jn Miller and Geo Moore Jun. in the Shallops Boat to bring him over to the House, when he proved to be Cuthbert Davison (from Middleburgh) on questioning him as to his being on the Flatts and alone he gave me the following account - That as he and Alexander Keath were coming up yesterday afternoon to the Factory for Victuals, the violence of the wind overset the Boat as they were pafsing the head of Middleburgh Island that he and Keath succeeded in getting on the Keel of the Boat and were then drifted nearly acrofs to the lower East Bluff and from thence to a mile below Middleburgh, many times the waves washed them off from the Boat, their situation in which they as often succeeded in recovering - at length Keath was washed off to some distance and dispairing of regaining his hold on the Boat resigned himself to his fate and bade his Comrade farewell - Davison was himself washed off to the distance of 20 or 30 yards from the Boat but being an able Swimmer he was enabled by the blefsing of Providence to reach her again. Where Keath bade him farewell was he says in the middle of the Channel and he says he saw him sink - Davison after the lofs of his Partner continued his hold on the Boat and was drifted up to Pilgrim? Island where he got ashore - this is his account of this melancholy affair, but it appears a very improbable one - as I cannot conceive how the Boat could drift down the River against a Flood tide and a stiff breeze of North Wind."
