" York Fort 12th August 1782
Friend Peter
The purport of this is to advise You that the small Pox having been communicated to the Natives about Cumberland House and the upper Settlement have almost entirely rooted them, and the Pungees' having also caught the infection are most of them (that belong to this place) either dying or dead. You will therefore keep a strict look out that none of the Homeguards come to the factory but keep them at a proper distance so that none of the Pungees' that come for debt may have any Communication with them. Should you find the disorder has attacked any of them, do all in your power for their preservation. if the Englishmen have been handling any person that may have had the small Pox. you must be careful that they shift, wash and air their Cloaths as well as themselves 'ere they go near one of the homegaurds. by this prudent precaution the homeguards here are preserved. I solicit you most earnestly to adhere to this advice, as not only the Company's Interest but our own preservation depend now on the homeguards safety.
There is no appearance as yet of the Ship but hope for her soon as the Winds have been favourable for her of late. Wishing you free from accident and misfortune.
I remain Your's &c
Wm Falconer"

Severn house 18th May 1783
Dear Sir
I have the pleasure to inform You of my arrival here the 31st March but could not get the Indians perswaded to go with a pacquet at that time. I therefore dispatched them as soon as the Ice in the River cleared for a Boat to go acrofs.
The River broke up here the 14th Inst. and drove away very quietly. We have made but a poor Goose hunt as yet, but we have got several Deer from Indians and two or three from the hedge, so that we live pretty well. the Winter proved so fine for Partridges that the Men Netted a great Number which they subsisted mostly on. and am happy to inform you I found the house better provided than was informed at Albany or than I expected as you will find by the overhaul made at that time. Peter Willdridge has taken great care of every thing and acted with a deal of prudence.
Mr Falconers Leter to Peter Willdridge comes by this conveyance as does also the private Journal to which I refer you for further particulars and remain
Dear Sir

Fort Albany 5th July 1783
Mr Jn Hodgson
I Received your Letter by Pout and the other two Indians together with the several papers enclosed and rejoice to hear you were all in good health and had not wanted Provisions. I could wish to have heard respecting the state of the Remains of York Fort especially as these Indians report only 3/4 of it to be destroyed. I propose sending the Sloop as soon as she can pofsibly be got ready, and have enclosed a Signal. You will have a Buoy laid in the fair way and the two usual Beacons. Thomas Catley knows how to lay and set them properly. I have paid these Indians well as indeed they deserve it for their quick arrival and to quicken them back that you may receive the Signal in time. I have promised you shall pay them 20 Beaver a piece, which you will accordingly comply with, as we must not in this case spare for any reasonable expence, the small Pox has made its way above Gloucester. Their Trade is packed and is somewhat better than 4000 made Beaver. the Indians being in a great hurry to return to their Families obliges me to defer more particulars till the Sloop arrives with You, with my best wishes for a continuance of your health and the Men under your Charge. " To Mr Jn Hodgson Master at Severn House
Fort Albany 17th July 1783
Mr J Hodgson
Sir
1st. The Company's Sloop the Eastmain, Mr Jn Horn Master, brings you this Pacquet with a Supply of Articles as pr enclosed List which you will make use of discretionally as is hereafter mentioned.
2d. If Mefs Tomison and Locky Should have arrived with you from Inland the latter will in all probability be able to give you more perfect intelligence of the late unfortunate Capture of the Northern Settlements, and as Mr Locky's retreating Inland, and the Mens return to You, may be the effect of some preconcerted plan formed in Council at York Fort at the first appearance of the Enemy. and previous to their Summons. in such case you will consult with Mefs Horn Tomison and Locky and Should it appear to you to be of advantage to the Company's Service that Mr Tomison or yourself should stay at Severn another Year upon an almost afsuredly expected arrival of a Vefsel from England you will retain the Supply of Trading Goods now sent You for your Trade and Support and Mr Horn has orders to leave as much Provisions as he can pofsibly spare with prudence as he carries an extra Supply for that purpose.
3d But Should you have received no other materiel intelligence than what we are already in pofsefsion of you are in such case to embark yourself and Men with the most Valuable articles of Trading Goods on board the Sloop as the Season advances fast, leaving the House standing and the most cumbersome articles of Stores behind enjoining some of the Home Indians on whom you can mostly rely to stay by it till the usual arrival of the Sloop from York Fort. You may afsure them that you will again return. that you are only going to afsist in fighting our Enemy's. and that if we prove victorious of which we have confident hope they will still be supplied as usual. You may make them a large Present and Exhort them not to be faint-hearted. that our country is Strong and that we will not leave them finally to perish by want. You may Conclude by leaving a Letter which you will receive enclosed for any Gentleman in the Company's Service with an Indian of the most proved fidelity and enclosing a duplicate in a Quart Bottle in the House.
4th Should any Indians be about You waiting for an expected Supply of Trading Goods in the Sloop. you will Trade them but not receive more Goods on Shore than your present want requires unlefs in the case mentioned in the second Paragraph.
Lastly You will use the utmost expedition in dispatching the Sloop again on her return down the Bay as an affair of very material Consequence to the Companys Affairs in the presant Crisis and exert your utmost prudence in determining from Circumstances as they arise (which cannot be foreseen at this distance) the measures to be pursued for the Company's advantage which will afsure you the Regard and Esteem of the Honourable Company and that of -
Your hble Servant
Edward Jarvis."
Aug. 14
" Thursday Wind and Weather much the same as yesterday the Sloop came up and anchored about 1/4 mile below the House. having grounded upon a Shoal in coming up which hindered her from reaching the Launch. As we have heard no account of the Cumberland House Men nor no further News of any kind relating to the Capture of the Northern Settlements. we are intending to embark with Mr Horn for Albany as soon as pofsible according to Mr Jarvis's directions in the third Paragraph of his Letter and have been employed packing the remains of Trading Goods in Casks. In the Evening part of our Hunters came in from the Northward with the flesh of a Deer. informed them of our resolutions and Concluded with telling them to keep a good heart and that we was not going to desert them entirely. they seemed very sorry but upon me telling them I Should give them some Powder and Shot &c they was very well Satisfied."

Delivered the Letter received from Mr Edward Jarvis to an half Upland Indian who is well acquainted with most of the Uplanders and has been lying about the House all the Summer waiting the arrival of a Sloop from England. Could not get any of the homeguards perswaded to Stay. they being afraid of the Uplanders, as I have seen during my stay here, when only one Canoe of Uplanders came down, the very sight of them drove every one of these Homeguards away. I have left this Man therefore to take care of the House together with his Son in Law, and have given them a Presant. left a duplicate of the Letter enclosed in a Quart Bottle in the House. also left a little Flour, half a Cask of Salt Geese and most of a Cask of Salt Venison for these Indians Subsistance."
